SUBJECT:  K-12 Mathematics Standards of Learning Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce K-12 Mathematics Institutes to be held in October 2013 at four sites in the Commonwealth. These four Institutes are designed to provide teachers with professional development focused on the relationship between curriculum, instruction, and assessment, by targeting the process of analysis and modification of existing instructional and assessment resources to match student learning expectations and promote problem solving.

The Institutes will continue implementation support of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL), framed by the five goals for students becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations.  The Institutes will provide support in the implementation of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and new assessments through:

These one-day Institutes (8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) will be offered in a train-the-trainer professional development format for teachers, division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, division lead mathematics teachers, and other administrators with responsibility for mathematics education.  Registration is limited to six participants from each school division. 

Registration
Virginia Tech’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee should identify a division-level contact who will identify the members of the six-person team.  Division teams of six should be divided among the four grade-band sessions with no more than two participants in a single grade-band session.

Institute grade-bands are as follows:

Registration for each of the four sites will be closed two weeks prior to the Institute or when registration is filled.  Registration can be completed online by the division contact or by identified division-level participants at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/vsolp/.  Participating teams may select only one-site among the four offered at the following locations:

Lunch will be provided for participants.  School divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses and lodging, if needed, for division participants for the training Institutes, as these cost are not assumed by the VDOE.
