SUBJECT:  Rural and Low-Income School Program Symposium

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the Ninth Annual Title VI, Part B, Subpart 2, Rural and Low-Income School Program Symposium in collaboration with the Title III, Part A, Limited English Proficient (LEP) Program, and the Title I, Part C, Education of Migratory Children Program.  This symposium is designed for practitioners and administrators employed in rural school divisions.  A Framework for Improving Reading in the Content Areas, Part II will be presented by Dr. Margarita Calderon & Associates.  The Part II focus areas are:

  1. Reviewing basic steps for selecting and teaching different types of key words, phrases, and frames;
  2. Selecting reading strategies that make content comprehensible;
  3. Developing lessons using a lesson template; and
  4. Utilizing Observation Protocol to reflect after a lesson, to do peer-coaching, or for coaches or administrators to observe classroom instruction and provide appropriate feedback.

This symposium will be held at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, 901 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, Virginia, on September 23-25, 2013.  Registration will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, September 23.  The symposium will commence at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 23, and conclude at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25.  School divisions in receipt of Title VI, Part B, Subpart 2; Title III, Part A; and Title I, Part C, funds are invited to send coordinators, teachers, and other division instructional representatives to this symposium.

The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage the online registration.  The link is: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/rss/.  The online registration must be completed by Monday, September 16, 2013.  If assistance is needed, please contact Virginia Tech’s main registration office at (504) 231-5182.  Continental breakfasts, breaks, lunches, and lodging will be provided by the Virginia Department of Education.  Other allowable expenses may be charged to the respective local federal program budget.
