FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
In an effort to provide additional assistance to teachers and administrators as they address the educational needs of students with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD), the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is announcing that a guidance document, “Virginia’s Guidelines for Educating Students with Specific Learning Disabilities,” is now available. The document can be found in the Learning Disability section of the VDOE’s Web site at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/special_ed/disabilities/learning_disability/index.shtml.
These guidelines offer an overview of best practices for educating students with SLD and should be used in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Education Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia as well as other VDOE guidance documents. The guidelines are informational and are not mandated.
For additional information, questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Teresa Lee, instructional specialist, Office of Special Education and Student Services, at Teresa.Lee@doe.virginia.gov or by telephone at (804) 371-8283.
