TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  Phase-out of End-of-Course (EOC) History/Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests Based on 2001 SOL

In 2010-2011 new tests that measured the 2008 History/Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) were administered for the first time.    However, students who had passed the coursework that covered the 2001 SOL for Virginia and United States History, World History and Geography to 1500 A.D. (C.E.), World History and Geography 1500 A.D. (C.E.) to the Present, or World Geography but failed the test(s) prior to fall 2010 have been allowed to continue to take the end-of-course tests that measure the 2001 standards.

Following the summer 2014 administration, the EOC History/Social Science tests that measure the 2001 SOL will no longer be offered.  Beginning with the fall 2014 SOL test administration, all students must take EOC History/ Social Science tests based on the 2008 standards.
