The Virginia Board of Education will hold two public hearings to solicit comments on the proposed revised Standards of Learning for Foreign Language. These will be held on March 27 and April 3, 2014. The Foreign Language Standards of Learning identify the essential content, processes, and skills for foreign language courses. The proposed standards are available on the Internet at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/foreign_language/2014/index.shtml.
The March 27, 2014, hearing will be held on the 22nd floor, James Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219. The hearing will be held immediately following the adjournment of the Board of Education business meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. Registration of speakers will begin at 11:30 a.m.
The April 3, 2014, hearing will be held at Northside Middle School, 6810 Northside High School Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24019. The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. Registration of speakers will begin at 6:30 p.m. Speakers will have three minutes to speak and should bring copies of their comments for the Board of Education.
Comments regarding the current standards may be submitted on the Virginia Department of Education Web site at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/foreign_language/2014/index.shtml. Comments will be received at this address from March 14, 2014 to April 14, 2014. Comments may also be mailed by April 14, 2014, to Dr. Lisa Harris, specialist for foreign languages, Office of Humanities and Early Childhood, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120.
