Two apps, originally developed for Apple’s iOS devices in the Department of Education’s Virginia Mobile Learning Apps Development Challenges, will soon be available for Android devices at https://play.google.com/store at no charge to students, families, and educators everywhere. The scheduled release date of June 1 will enable students to take advantage of summer break to refresh their mathematics, history, and social studies knowledge. These applications are intended to use handheld technologies to encourage student-directed learning and enrichment beyond the classroom.
Master the Math is an educational game that features over 800 questions from 19 released Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to help students prepare for SOL examinations with a focus on the mathematics curriculum from grades three to eight. Pass the Past helps students prepare for the SOL exams with a focus on World, United States, and Virginia history, civics, and geography. A new feature of the Android versions will allow tests to be modified and updated through a Web-based interface. When new items are added, the apps will update themselves automatically when they connect to the Internet so that students will be able to easily access the latest test items.
