Department of Education
June 6, 2014
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 English Language Arts Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes to be held in October 2014 at six sites throughout the Commonwealth. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state to support the implementation of 2010 English Standards of Learning.
The K-12 English Language Arts SOL Institutes will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development that focuses on nonfiction and fiction reading, writing, successful strategies with English Language Learners (ELL) and Students with Disabilities (SWD). Participants will attend four different concurrent breakout sessions with either an elementary or secondary focus.
The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee should identify a division-level contact that will identify and register the four participants from the division among: (1) English Language Arts supervisor, (1) elementary teacher, (1) middle school teacher, (1) high school teacher (1) ESL teacher, and (1) Special Education teacher. Confirmation of the teams’ registration will be e-mailed to the division-level contact. If the registration form submitted indicates that additional staff members are interested in attending the Institute, the designee will be informed if space is available after all divisions have registered. Registration for each of the sites closes one week prior to the Institute or when registration is filled. In an effort to go paperless, all program materials for the English SOL Institutes will be available on an app. Directions and a link to the app will be e-mailed to each registered participant. Internet access will be available at all the Institutes. Participants need to bring their own device to access the app. Registration can be completed online at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/esoli/.
