SUBJECT:  Call for Nominations for the Virginia Board of Education’s Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure (ABTEL):  2014-2017 Term

The Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominees to serve a three-year term on the Advisory Board for Teacher Education and Licensure.

The 2014 General Assembly approved House Bill 725 that increases membership of the Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure from 19 to 21 and increases from two to four the number of members who shall be faculty members in teacher preparation programs in public or private institutions of higher education, who may represent the arts and sciences. The terms will begin in July 2014 and end in June 2017.

College and university officials, superintendents, individuals, and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to fill the two vacancies on the Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure.  Persons are also welcome to nominate themselves.  Nominee submissions will be reviewed, and recommendations will be submitted to the Board of Education in July 2014.

Please note the two vacancies must be filled by faculty members in teacher preparation programs in public or private institutions of higher education, who may represent the arts and sciences.

Article nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known to be qualified to perform their duties. Unless otherwise prescribed by state or federal law or regulations, all appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Article sixteen, Section 4, of the Bylaws goes on to state that appointments to an advisory committee shall be for a term of three years. Members of an advisory committee may be appointed to a second consecutive three-year term, but shall not be eligible to serve for more than six consecutive years.

Nominations may be made by completing the attached recommendation form. Please send the completed form to Director for Board Relations Melissa Luchau, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120. Nominations may also be submitted by e-mail at Melissa.Luchau@doe.virginia.gov.

All nominations must be received by Thursday, July 3.

Questions regarding the Board of Education’s advisory committees or activities may be addressed to Mrs. Melissa Luchau by e-mail at Melissa.Luchau@doe.virginia.gov or by phone at (804) 225-2924.
