SUBJECT:  Call for Nominations for the Virginia Board of Education’s Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure (ABTEL) to Fill Two Vacancies

The Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominations for the following two teacher vacancies on the Advisory Board for Teacher Education and Licensure.

Elementary Classroom Teacher (to fill an expired term until June 30, 2016)

Nominees must be elementary education teachers.

Middle Education Classroom Teacher (to fill an expired term until June 30, 2015)

Nominees must be middle education teachers.

Priority consideration will be given to representation in the Department of Education Superintendents’ Regions 3 and 5.  Below are the counties and cities in Regions 3 and 5.

Superintendents, colleges and universities, individuals, and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to fill the vacancy on the Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure.  Persons also are welcome to nominate themselves.  Nominee submissions will be reviewed, and a recommendation will be submitted to the Board of Education.
Article nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known to be qualified to perform their duties. Personnel of the Department of Education may be appointed to the committee, as members or as consultants. Unless otherwise prescribed by state or federal law or regulations, all appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Article sixteen, Section 4, of the bylaws goes on to state that appointments to an advisory committee shall be for a term of three years. Members of an advisory committee may be appointed to a second consecutive three-year term, but shall not be eligible to serve for more than six consecutive years.

Nominations may be made by completing the attached recommendation form. Please send the completed form to the Board of Education c/o Marian Morris, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120. Nominations may also be submitted by e-mail at Marian.Morris@doe.virginia.gov.

All nominations must be received by Monday, February 23.
