TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in collaboration with the certified OSHA faculty from West Virginia University, will conduct the Construction Standards (OSHA 510) Course and Construction Train-the-Trainer (OSHA 500) Course for Virginia trade and industrial education instructors and other related CTE educators who require initial OSHA certification or recertification. Both courses will be held at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel, 2801 Hershberger Road, NW, Roanoke, Virginia, and offered in conjunction with the Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE) Summer Conference as follows: July 25-28, 2015 – OSHA 510; and July 31-August 3, 2015 – OSHA 500.
To participate in the OSHA 500 course, instructors must bring proof that they have had the prerequisite OSHA 510 or were certified previously in OSHA 500 or 502. Successful completion of the OSHA 500 course will enable instructors to teach and award students an OSHA 10 or 30 card during the next four years.
The workshop trainer and resource materials will be provided by VDOE. Participants are responsible for all meals, travel-related expenses, and lodging, if needed. School divisions’ Perkins funds are allowable for this expenditure. Each instructor will be provided a paper copy manual and a CD with digital copies of the OSHA 500 and over 80 PowerPoint presentations on the OSHA construction standards. These curriculum resources are designed to be integrated into construction trade and other related courses.
The OSHA course enrollments are limited and will be assigned upon receipt of the registration form. To enroll in the OSHA courses, instructors must complete the attached registration form and return it to the Office of Career and Technical Education Services at email@example.com, or by fax at 804-530-4560 by June 1, 2015.
