The Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominees to serve on its State Special Education Advisory Committee, Advisory Committee for Career & Technical Education, and Advisory Committee on Adult Education & Literacy. A previous call for nominations was announced in Superintendent’s Memo #079-15, April 3, 2015. The deadline for nominations to serve on the three committees noted in this memo has been extended to June 5, 2015.
The advisory committees and current vacancies are listed below. The terms will begin in July 2015 and end in June 2018 unless otherwise noted.
State Special Education Advisory Committee
Five Vacancies – Nominees are being sought in the following categories:
(Parent representatives on the SSEAC must be parents of children with disabilities who are within the ages of birth through 26 during their terms of appointment.)
Advisory Committee for Career & Technical Education
Six Vacancies – Nominees are especially sought for representation in the following career sectors: Architecture and Construction; Arts, Audio/Visual Technology and Communications; Health and Medical Sciences; Hospitality and Tourism; Advanced Manufacturing – Energy Industry; and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.
Priority consideration will be given to representation from Regions 6, 7, and 8.
Advisory Committee on Adult Education & Literacy
Five vacancies – Nominees are being sought in the following categories:

Superintendents and other individuals and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to fill current vacancies as noted above. Persons are also welcome to nominate themselves.
Article nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known to be qualified to perform their duties. Personnel of the Department of Education may be appointed to the committee, as members or as consultants. Unless otherwise prescribed by state or federal law or regulations, all appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Article sixteen, Section 4, of the bylaws also states that appointments to an advisory committee shall be for a term of three years. Members of an advisory committee may be appointed to a second consecutive three-year term, but shall not be eligible to serve for more than six consecutive years.
