TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Review of the History and Social Science Aligned Standards of Learning: Seeking Input from Stakeholders

On March 26, 2015, the Virginia Board of Education adopted the revised History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL).  When the SOL are revised, the Aligned Standards of Learning (ASOL), which are based on the SOL but reduced in depth and complexity, are also revised. The ASOL are developed for students with significant cognitive disabilities who are assessed through participation in the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP).

An important part of the review process for the History and Social Science Aligned Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from teachers, administrators, curriculum supervisors, history and social science educators, special educators, and others who have expertise with the content of the current standards.  Please inform personnel in your school division and other stakeholders that they may review and comment on the aligned standards at the Virginia Department of Education’s Web site.  Comments will be received from December 7, 2015 to January 5, 2016.

Questions about this matter may be addressed to Deborah Johnson, educational specialist in the Office of Special Education Instructional Services, by telephone at (804) 371-2725 or by e-mail at Deborah.Johnson@doe.virginia.gov or the Office of Test Administration, Scoring and Reporting, by telephone at (804) 225-2102 or by e-mail at student_assessment@doe.virginia.gov.  Thank you for your cooperation.
