SUBJECT: Call for Nominations for the Virginia Board of Education’s Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure (ABTEL)

The Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominations for individuals to serve on the Advisory Board for Teacher Education and Licensure.  The current vacancies and terms are listed below:

Elementary Classroom Teacher (Public Schools)
(To fill the unexpired term of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2016)

Elementary Classroom Teacher (Public Schools)
(To fill the unexpired term of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2016)

Secondary Classroom Teacher (Public Schools)
(To fill the unexpired term of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2016)

Classroom Teacher (Nonpublic Schools)
(To fill the unexpired term of July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2018)

The Board of Education seeks to have geographic representation among the appointees.  Preference for the public school teachers will be given to teachers nominated in Regions 2, 3, and 7.

Superintendents, colleges and universities, individuals, and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to fill the vacancies on the Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure.  Persons also are welcome to nominate themselves.  Nominee submissions will be reviewed, and a recommendation will be submitted to the Board of Education.

Article nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known to be qualified to perform their duties. Personnel of the Department of Education may be appointed to the committee, as members or as consultants. Unless otherwise prescribed by state or federal law or regulations, all appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Article sixteen, Section 4, of the bylaws goes on to state that appointments to an advisory committee shall be for a term of three years.  Members of an advisory committee may be appointed to a second consecutive three-year term, but shall not be eligible to serve for more than six consecutive years.

Nominations may be made by completing the attached recommendation form.  Please send the completed form to Director for Board Relations Melissa Luchau, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120. Nominations may also be submitted by e-mail at Melissa.Luchau@doe.virginia.gov.

All nominations must be received by Thursday, December 30.
