TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Introduction to the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) Webinar

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) would like to extend an invitation for all school divisions to participate in the Introduction to the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) webinar.  The webinar will provide an overview of the VTSS and will include a description of the problem solving model, tiered interventions, data-based decision-making, evidence-based practices and system-based thinking.

This introductory webinar is the first session of the VTSS Readiness Series.  The series will offer quarterly webinars to guide school divisions through the early implementation stages of the VTSS.  Upon completion of the VTSS Readiness Series, school divisions will be well prepared to apply to participate in the next VTSS Cohort (Spring 2017).  Divisions participating in VTSS cohorts receive training and on-site coaching from VDOE.  The VTSS Cohort application priority points will be awarded to divisions successfully completing the Readiness Series.

The VTSS Introduction webinar will be held on January 21, 2016 from 2 to 3 p.m.  This opportunity is free and available to all school division personnel and their partners.  Registration for the webinar is available at https://redcap.vcu.edu/surveys/?s=8DFHMFY79X.

This opportunity supports Governor’s McAuliffe’s Classroom not Courtrooms Initiative that includes expanding and improving school divisions’ use of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as part of the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports.  For more information about the Governor’s initiative, please refer to the Superintendent’s Memo #277-15.

Questions regarding the VTSS Introduction webinar or the VTSS Readiness Series should be directed to Dr. Thomas Manthey, VTSS coordinator, via e-mail at Tom.Manthey@doe.virginia.gov, or by telephone at (804) 225-4024.
