TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
Beginning in the fall of 2015, Virtual Virginia, the online program provided by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), implemented a math outreach pilot program. This program provided a series of live interactive online lessons for Algebra I students across the Commonwealth, as well as provided a collection of resources, including recorded videos and suggested classroom activities, for Virginia teachers. Beginning in the fall of 2016, the math outreach pilot program will be expanded to include both Algebra I and Geometry and will be implemented in the same manner.
The math outreach program is designed to support classrooms in school divisions in need of properly licensed and endorsed Algebra I and Geometry teachers during the 2016-2017 academic year. The resources will be available for re-teaching or intervention by any teacher in Virginia.
If your school division has a school(s) with teachers currently assigned to teach Algebra I and/or Geometry content who are not properly licensed and would be interested in applying to participate in the program, applications will be accepted until August 15, 2016 and will be considered as they are accepted.
These lessons will also be made available to all school divisions asynchronously at no cost via both Virtual Virginia and eMediaVA, a digital media distribution platform that provides teachers and students a learning resource with digital learning objects, video, audio, and interactive and graphic elements all correlated to the Standards of Learning.
WHRO – Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association also provides Algebra I lessons and will provide Geometry lessons for use by school divisions. The lessons are available to all school divisions via eMediaVA and can be streamed, downloaded, or embedded into lessons, online courses, or e-textbooks.
For classrooms utilizing these synchronous or asynchronous instructional resources, speakers and a projector may assist in maximizing the full benefits of the lessons.
The live lessons and resources will be available to the selected school divisions beginning as early as August 8, 2016, to be adjusted based on school start dates of participating divisions. The asynchronous lessons will be available online the week following each live lesson. Recorded lessons from the 2015-2016 school year provided by both Virtual Virginia and WHRO are currently available for Algebra I.
Information on the math outreach program can be found at the Virtual Virginia Math Outreach website.
