SUBJECT: Code of Virginia § 9.1-110 regarding School Resource Officers Employed with School Resource Officer Grants

The purpose of this memo is to inform you that the 2016 General Assembly passed House Bill 487 amending the Code of Virginia § 9.1-110.  The changes signify that school resource officers employed pursuant to the School Resource Officer Grants Program are no longer required to enforce school board rules and codes of student conduct as a condition of their employment. The Code has been amended to read, “School resource officers shall be certified law-enforcement officers and shall be employed to help ensure safety and prevent truancy and violence in schools.”
