FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: K-12 Mathematics Standards of Learning Institutes
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce K-12 Mathematics Institutes to be held in March and April 2017 at four sites across the Commonwealth. These Institutes will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development focused on instruction that supports implementation of the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL). The sessions will be framed by the five process goals for students becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations. Professional development materials based on the 2016 Mathematics SOL Institutes will be posted online for use by grade-level or subject-area teacher learning communities.
The four, one-day Institutes (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) will be offered for teachers, division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, division lead mathematics teachers, and other administrators with responsibility for mathematics.
Virginia Tech’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee will select a division-level contact. The division-level contact will identify and register up to eight team members at the site geographically closest among the four offered locations. Space is limited and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. No more than two members may be registered for each of the following grade bands:
- Kindergarten – Grade 2
- Grade 3 – Grade 5
- Grade 6 – Grade 8
- Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
Registration for each of the four sites will be closed two weeks prior to the Institute or when registration is filled. The division-level contact will complete registration online. Confirmation of the teams' registration will be emailed to the division-level contact. Participating teams may select only one site among the four locations:
