TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Summer Institutes for World Language Teachers and Supervisors

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce two opportunities to support World Language programs in Virginia school divisions.

LinguaFolio® Virginia Summer Institute for World Language Supervisors or Lead Teachers

Every school division is encouraged to send one world language supervisor or lead teacher to participate in the training.  Participants in the LinguaFolio® Virginia Institute will receive training sufficient to become the division expert in the background, support, and use of the LinguaFolio® system.  Each school division is guaranteed one place at the training.  Divisions may nominate a second person to attend on a space available basis.

All costs for the Institute will be paid by the VDOE, with the exception of travel to and from the training site.

A follow up LinguaFolio® workshop will be available for classroom teachers in October as part of the annual Foreign Language Association of Virginia (FLAVA) conference.

Regional Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) Summer Institutes

MOPI Institutes will be held at three regional sites during the summer of 2017.  The goal of these Institutes is to provide world language teachers with the training needed to assess students’ oral language proficiency on the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) rating scale.

The Institutes are open to a maximum of 30 world language teachers per site.  Participants may include any K-12 modern world language teacher or world language department chair.  Participants will be expected to incorporate the Oral Proficiency Interview assessment techniques in the world language classroom and to share the information with other world language teachers in the division.

Materials, one night’s lodging, and some meals will be provided.  Participants are required to be present for all event and meal functions.

The summer MOPI Institutes will take place as follows:

June 28-29, 2017
  • Fairfax County, Robert Frost Middle School, Fairfax, VA
  • Open to all modern languages
July 11-12, 2017
  • Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA
  • Spanish and French sessions available
July 24-25, 2017
  • Washington County, Abingdon High School, Abingdon, VA
  • Spanish sessions only

MOPI Registration - The cost for the MOPI Institutes will be paid by VDOE.  Registration is limited to 30 teachers per site and the deadline to apply is April 28, 2017.  Teachers may register online at 2017 Summer MOPI ApplicationThis link takes you out of the Virginia Department of Education website.

Please note that successful submission of the registration form does not guarantee acceptance into the Institutes.  Selection will address regional representation and priority will be given to registering teachers who teach in high poverty areas.  Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status via email on May 12, 2017.

Lodging - VDOE will fund one double-occupancy hotel room for one night for each participant. VDOE will make all lodging reservations and cancellations for those participants.

Mileage - School divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses for division participants for the Institutes, as this cost is not assumed by the VDOE.

Directions - Directions to each training site, along with additional details of the training, will be provided to each participant after acceptance to the Institutes.
