SUBJECT: Technical Assistance Academy for Coordinators of Title I, Part A; Title I, Part C; Title I, Part D; Title II, Part A; and Title III, Part A

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce its annual technical assistance academy for federal program coordinators and other key instructional staff from the programs listed below supporting the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

Title I, Part A: Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged;
Title I, Part C: Education of Migratory Children;
Title I, Part D: Neglected, Delinquent, or At-risk;
Title II, Part A: Supporting Effective Instruction; and 
Title III, Part A: Language Instruction for English Learners and Immigrant Students.

The academy will be held at two regional locations. Attendance according to the regional location of the school division is strongly encouraged.

The first day at each location will begin with a pre-academy new coordinators’ session from 9 a.m. to noon for Title I, Part A; Title II, Part A; and Title III, Part A. These sessions are designed specifically for coordinators with three years or less experience to explore in-depth the fundamentals of the federal program in which they are working.

Following the pre-academy, the academy will begin at noon for all participants and will continue through noon on the second day. Focus areas will include ESSA; program application submissions; federal program monitoring; administrative practices; fiscal issues; equitable services for private schools; and family engagement.

The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage the registration, make hotel reservations on behalf of participants, and provide confirmation. Participants requiring lodging at either location must register no later than June 17, 2017. Participants not requiring lodging should register no later than July 3, 2017, for Roanoke and July 17, 2017, for Williamsburg. Pre-academy lodging will be master billed on the evening before the academy begins for new coordinators traveling 50 miles or more to the designated pre-academy location. For those attending the academy, lodging will be master billed for those traveling a distance of 50 miles or more one way to the academy location. 

A lunch, refreshment breaks, and a breakfast will be provided during the academy. Mileage and meals not offered may be charged to the respective local division-level federal program in accordance with state travel guidelines.
