Implementation of the 2017 English Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework


On November 16, 2017, the Board of Education adopted the Proposed Revised 2017 English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework for public schools in Virginia (see Agenda Item A (PDF)). The final version of the 2017 English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework will be posted on the Virginia Department of Education's website in February 2018.

The 2017 English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework, a companion document to the 2017 English Standards of Learning, amplifies the standards and further defines the content knowledge, skills, and understandings.  The 2017 English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework is not meant to be an entire curriculum, but rather to provide additional guidance to school divisions and their teachers as they develop their local program of studies, an instructional program appropriate for their students.  This supplemental framework delineates in greater specificity the content that all teachers should teach and all students should learn.

The implementation timeline for the 2017 English Standards of Learning and 2017 English Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework follows:

2017-2018 School Year – Approval of the 2017 English Standards of Learning and the 2017 English Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework

2018-2019 School Year – Crosswalk Year

2019-2020 School Year – Full-Implementation Year
