K-12 English Language Arts Standards of Learning Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 English Language Arts Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes to be held in October-November 2018 at six sites throughout the Commonwealth. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state to support and enhance the implementation of 2017 English Standards of Learning.

K-12 English Language Arts SOL Institutes will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development training that focuses on the integration of the strands of the 2017 English Standards of Learning: reading, writing, research, communication, and multimodal literacies.  Participants will attend a general session featuring the Library of Congress and four different concurrent breakout sessions with either an elementary or secondary focus.

Registration:

The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage registration.  Each division superintendent or designee should identify a division-level contact who will identify and register the five participants from the division among: (1) English Language Arts supervisor, (1) elementary teacher, (1) middle school teacher, (1) high school teacher, and (1) Special Education Coordinator or teacher. The registration link will be directly emailed to each English division-level contact and confirmation of each team’s registration will be emailed to the same contact.  Once each school division has registered their team, the registration link will be published on the VDOE website in order to open registration for all.  In an effort to go paperless, all program materials for the English SOL Institutes will be available on the Internet cloud, and program materials for all six Institutes will be made available to all participants.  Internet access will be available at all the Institutes.  Participants need to bring their own devices.   School division teams should select only one site among the six offered at the following locations:

Lodging:

School divisions are encouraged to cover lodging and travel expenses for division participants for the training Institutes, as the cost is not assumed by the VDOE.
