News Release, December 16, 2008 – Board of Education Names 2008-2009 Student Advisory Committee.Mission Statement
The Student Advisory Committee to the Board of Education will represent and serve the students of Virginia by acting as a liaison between students and the board, understanding and voicing the concerns and issues facing students, giving a fresh perspective to the board members, and using our diversity as a collective voice to provide feasible solutions.

The Student Advisory Committee advises the Board of Education on issues of interest to students. The committee meets 3 times a year with two meetings coinciding with regularly scheduled board meetings. The committee includes high school students from each of the Department of Education's eight administrative regions and four middle school students selected at-large.

How are students selected?
Students submit applications to the board after being nominated by their high schools, middle schools, or by a statewide student organization. Nominees must demonstrate solid academic performance, strong communication and leadership skills, involvement in a variety of school and community activities, and an interest in state education law and policy.
Since creating the Student Advisory Committee in 2000, the board has acted on a number of its recommendations. Following the recommendation of the 2003-2004 SAC, the board established a quarterly Leadership in Cultural Diversity Education Award to recognize schools and school divisions that promote an understanding and responsiveness to cultural diversity.
