Establishing Criteria and Examinations for Board of Education's Seal of Advanced Mathematics and Technology

WHEREAS, the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia, Requirements for graduation 8 VAC 20-131-50.I.4., provide students who demonstrate academic excellence and/or outstanding achievement the opportunity to earn a Board of Education's Seal of Advanced Mathematics and Technology; and
WHEREAS, the seal will be awarded to students who earn either a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma; and
WHEREAS, eligible students must satisfy all of the mathematics requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma (four units of credit including Algebra II; two verified units of credit) with a “B” average or better; and
WHEREAS, eligible students must either (a) pass an examination in a career and technical education field that confers certification from a recognized industry, or trade or professional association; (b) acquire a professional license in a career and technical education field from the Commonwealth of Virginia; or (c) pass an examination approved by the Board that confers college-level credit in a technology or computer science area; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education will establish the following criteria to be used in identifying eligible licenses and examinations:
1) The exam must be in a career and technical education field that confers a certification from a recognized industry, or trade, or professional association, or an exam that confers college-level credit in a technology or computer science area;
2) The examination must be standardized and graded independently of the school or school division in which the student is enrolled;
3) The examination must be knowledge based;
4) The examination must be administered on a multi-state or international basis; and
5) The course of study for which the student receives a certification or college-level credit must be designed to prepare the student for an occupation or occupational area that is technology driven.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Education will approve the certifications listed in Attachment A and the following examinations and passing scores that confer college-level credit in a technology or computer science area:
- Advanced Placement Computer Science A (Passing Score--3);
- Advanced Placement Computer Science AB (Passing score--3); and
- College Level Examination (CLEP) Information Systems and Computer Applications (Passing score--52).
