Declaring Support for the Virginia Ed-Flex Application
Resolution Number 2000-8

WHEREAS, the Education Flexibility Partnership Act (Ed-Flex) of 1999 allows the U.S. Secretary of Education to delegate to states with strong accountability safeguards the authority to waive certain federal education requirements that may, in particular instances, impede local efforts to reform and improve education; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Board of Education has directed the Virginia Department of Education to prepare for submission an application for participation in the Ed-Flex Program; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Education has developed the Ed-Flex application for review and approval by the Board of Education; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Education, after review and approval, will direct the Virginia Department of Education to submit the Ed-Flex application to the U.S. Department of Education;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education, upon approval of Virginia’s Ed-Flex application by the U.S. Department of Education, will support and encourage local school divisions to submit waiver requests that promote effective implementation of state and local educational reform initiatives.
