ESEA FLEXIBILITY INFORMATION FROM STATE SUPERINTENDENT PATRICIA I. WRIGHT
August 1, 2013
Announcement of Reading Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) Under the Provisions of Virginia’s Approved Application for USED Flexibility from Certain Requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA)
The purpose of this communication is to announce reading Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) for accountability years 2013-2014 through 2017-2018 (Years 2-6) based on results of the new statewide reading assessments administered for the first time during the 2012-2013 school year.
On Friday, March 15, 2013, school divisions were informed via Superintendent’s Memo #069-13 that the U.S. Department of Education approved an alternate revised methodology for establishing annual measurable objectives (AMOs) in reading and mathematics for accountability years 2013-2014 through 2017-2018 (Years 2-6), as approved by the Virginia Board of Education at its October 25, 2012, meeting. An explanation of the final AMO methodology is available in an updated version of Virginia’s approved application for waivers from certain requirements of ESEA, also known as Virginia’s No Child Left Behind waiver application, and in agenda item I of the October 25, 2012, Board meeting.
The revised reading AMOs are provided in Attachment A. As a reminder, and for ease of reference, the mathematics AMOs are also included in Attachment A. The mathematics AMOs were calculated in fall 2012 based on results of the new mathematics assessments administered for the first time during the 2011-2012 school year.
It is anticipated that preliminary school and division federal accountability reports will be available to school division personnel in the Single Sign-On for Web Systems (SSWS) application by August 5, 2013, or as soon as possible thereafter. The preliminary accountability reports will reflect the revised AMOs displayed above.
As a result of today’s announcement of revised reading AMOs, certain revisions have been made to the Accountability Reports Timeline originally announced in a June 27, 2013, Supt’s E-mail. The revised Accountability Reports Timeline is provided in Attachment B.
Questions regarding Virginia’s revised AMOs may be submitted to ESEA@doe.virginia.gov.
