Part B: Student Reading Skills Improvement Grants
Title I, Part B supported efforts in schools and communities to improve reading skills and expand literacy. Through the years, VDOE administered three programs authorized by this title of the law.
- Part B Subpart 1: Reading First – ESEA funding ended June 30, 2010. Reading First provided assistance to establish scientifically based reading programs for students enrolled in kindergarten through grade three, funds for professional development to ensure that all teachers had necessary skills to effectively teach those students and screening, diagnostic tools and classroom-based instructional reading assessments.
- Part B Subpart 2: Early Reading First – ESEA funding ended June 30, 2012. Early Reading First supported the development of early childhood centers that focused on all areas of development, especially on the early language, cognitive and pre-reading skills that prepare children for continued school success and that served primarily children from low-income families.
- Part B Subpart 3: William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Program – ESEA funding ended June 30, 2012. Even Start provided participating families with an integrated program of early childhood education, adult education and basic skills instruction, parenting education and interactive literacy activities. All projects had some home-based instruction and provided for the joint participation of parents and children.
