May is Children’s Mental Health Month
An estimated one in five children between the ages of 9 and 17 experience a diagnosable mental health disorder in the course of a year. Of those children, 80 percent receive mental health services in and through schools. A tool kit, developed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, provides resources and suggestions for celebrating throughout the month and Children’s Mental Health Day on May 7.

Virginia's public schools are beginning a new trend line with the implementation of more challenging standards and assessments. The goal is to build on the progress already made under the Standards of Learning program and ensure that all graduates possess the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the workplace.![]()
