Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week - May 5-9, 2008 |
The Virginia Department of Education joins
schools across the nation in recognizing the contributions of school nutrition
professionals during School Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week, May 5-9, 2008.
Preparing healthy school meals, sharing
nutrition information, and offering a friendly greeting are all in a day’s work
for nearly 12,000 school nutrition employees working in
For
many students, school meals are the most important and nutrient-rich meals of
their day. Students and their families
depend upon school meals for one-third to one-half of a student’s daily
nutritional intake. The U.S. Government
Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, found that “school
meals are healthy and children who eat school meals consume more fruits,
vegetables, whole grains and dairy items than those who do not.”
The dedicated professionals who plan,
prepare, and serve nutritious school meals provide essential support to
students as they strive to achieve high academic standards and optimal
health. School divisions are asked to join the
Department of Education in recognizing the important contributions of school
nutrition employees to the success of our students.
For
more information, please contact the assigned school nutrition program
