Call for
Nominations for Board of Education Advisory Committees: 2008-2011 Term |
The
Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominees to serve a three-year term on
advisory committees appointed by the Board.
The terms will begin in July 2008 and end in June 2011.
The
Board of Education currently has five advisory committees. Please note that for two of the five advisory
committees, specific categories of expertise or geographic representation are
required by state or federal law or regulation. For all committees, the Board
of Education seeks to have geographic and racial/ethnic representation among
the appointees.
The
advisory boards and the current vacancies are listed below. It is indicated if
the current incumbent is eligible for reappointment.
Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure
Six vacancies. Nominees are being sought
in the following categories:

Secondary
Classroom Teacher (Career and Technical Education)
·
Classroom
Teacher (Elementary)
·
Parent/Teacher Association Representative
·
School Principal
·
Middle School Classroom Teacher: incumbent is
eligible for reappointment to a second term
·
Personnel Administration: incumbent is eligible for
reappointment to a second term
State Special Education Advisory Committee
Nine vacancies. Nominees are being sought
in the following categories:

Parent
of a child with a disability, Region 6
·
Parent
of a child with a disability, Region 8
·
Local
Director of Special Education
·
Representative
of a Private School
·
Representative
of an Institution of Higher Education: incumbent
is eligible for reappointment to a second term
·
Person
with a disability: incumbent is
eligible for reappointment to a second term
·
Representative
of a State Agency: incumbent is
eligible for reappointment to a second term
·
Representative
of the Department of Corrections: incumbent
is eligible for reappointment to a second term
·
Representative
of the Foster Care System: incumbent is
eligible for reappointment to a second term
Advisory Committee on Adult Education and Literacy
Three vacancies.
Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee
Five vacancies. Especially
seeking representatives from post-secondary education institutions and business
and industry representatives.
Virginia Advisory Committee for the Education of the Gifted
Five vacancies.
Article
nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in
September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons
who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known
to be qualified to perform their duties.
All appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board
upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Findings and recommendations are provided to
the Board of Education in a manner and at a time prescribed by the Board.
Superintendents
and other individuals and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to
fill current vacancies for each advisory committee as noted above. Nominee qualifications will be reviewed and a
slate of recommended members will be submitted to the Board of Education in
June 2008.
Nominations
may be made by completing the attached recommendation form. Please send the
completed form to Dr. Margaret N. Roberts, executive assistant to the Board of
Education,
All
nominations must be received by June 9, 2008.
