K – 3 Mathematics Achievement Records
The Standards of Accreditation Regulation 8 VAC 20-131-80 requires that schools shall maintain an early skills and knowledge achievement record in reading and mathematics for each student in grades kindergarten through grade 3 to monitor student progress and to promote successful achievement on the third grade SOL tests. This record shall be included with the student's records if the student transfers to a new school.
The Board of Education approved the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning on February 19, 2009. Full implementation of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning will begin in the fall of the 2011-2012 school year.
Two sample K – 3 Mathematics Achievement Records for the 2001 and 2009 SOL are posted below.Mathematics Sample #1
The Standards of Learning are organized by the mathematics strands. To enhance communication between the grade levels about student achievement, the strands are further delineated into the "Big Ideas" of the mathematics strands. This format would enhance a second-grade teacher’s ability to note that a child had difficulty in prior grades with place value but not counting in the Number and Number Sense strand. When the Standards of Learning are not delineated within strands, it may be more difficult for teachers to quickly identify specific problems within a mathematics strand and between grade levels.
Mathematics Sample #2
The only difference between sample #2 and sample #1 is the way in which the Standards of Learning are organized. In Sample #2, the Standards of Learning are grouped into the six mathematics strands to ensure that the mathematics strands are aligned between each grade.
