Part VIII. Careers for Water Enthusiasts
- Students interested in the watershed may wish to investigate the wide variety of careers related to conservation and restoration of watersheds and water resources. Teachers may wish to highlight a few such careers, including some that require college preparation and some that do not.
- Some careers require a bachelor's degree or higher. A few examples include coastal engineer, marine architect, environmental lobbyist, research biologist, environmental lawyer, marine science librarian, marine science writer, naturalist, aquatic veterinarian, underwater archeologist, and underwater filmmaker.
- Some jobs may not require a college degree for entry. A few examples include shipbuilder, marine engine mechanic, seafood processor, marine supply store worker, graphic illustrator for marine publications, lifeguard, port authority worker, computer technician, fishing boat operator, tour boat operator, diver, and aquaculture manager.
- Some careers require a bachelor's degree or higher. A few examples include coastal engineer, marine architect, environmental lobbyist, research biologist, environmental lawyer, marine science librarian, marine science writer, naturalist, aquatic veterinarian, underwater archeologist, and underwater filmmaker.
- Many government agencies, including the military, have positions for those who have interest and training in water-related fields. Some examples are park and forest services, environmental agencies, river authorities, agricultural extension services, planning and land use officials, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Merchant Marine, and the U.S. Air Force Air Weather Service.
- Conservation and restoration groups are another source of employment or volunteer work for those with education and skill in public relations, grant writing, fund-raising, public speaking, teaching, writing, graphic design, Web design, event planning, and similar areas.
