March 24, 2011 – The Virginia Board of Education adopted Virginia’s Revised Textbook Review Process

The Board of Education has the responsibility under the state constitution to approve textbooks for use in Virginia's public schools. Local school boards may adopt textbooks that are not on the board-approved list provided the school board selects such books in accordance with regulations promulgated by the board.
Any inaccuracies found in Virginia Board of Education-approved textbooks may be reported by submitting an e-mail comment to textbookcomment@doe.virginia.gov.
Instructional Materials and the Standards of Learning
The alignment of textbooks and instructional materials with the state's academic standards provides a foundation for student success. VDOE – with the assistance of experienced classroom teachers and other educators – reviews textbooks and instructional materials for alignment with the Standards of Learning (SOL) and makes recommendations to the Board of Education on state adoption.
