Twenty-six public school employees from 12 school divisions successfully completed the first Virginia Coordinated School Health Leadership Institute. The two-year program was developed to enhance student achievement and success through coordinated school health programs and to assist schools in addressing health-related issues that affect learning.
The leadership institute, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), the Virginia Department of Health, the American Cancer Society, and Virginia Comprehensive Health Education Training and Resource Center at Longwood University, graduated the following:
- Accomack County Public Schools — Kathy Lewis
- Arlington County Public Schools — Carolyn Newton and Lori Spencer
- Fairfax County Public Schools — Amy Hubal and Penny McConnell
- Fredericksburg Public Schools — Kim Mitchell and Diane Olivares
- Hanover County Public Schools — Lisa Minor, Stacey Parson, Sharon Pittman, and Kathryn Smith
- Henrico County Public Schools — Bonnie Conner-Gray, Judy Cunningham, and Timothy Mertz
- Isle of Wight County Public Schools — Lynn Newberry
- Loudoun County Public Schools — Sheila Jones and Bonnie Parker
- Orange County Public Schools — Kathryn Brunelle and Phyllis Smith
- Roanoke County Public Schools — LaVern Davis and Barry Trent
- Stafford County Public Schools — Carol Dexter and Kathy Whitby
- Washington County Public Schools — Rebecca Buchanan, Foney Mullins, and Robert Salyer
Participants develop personal and professional leadership skills designed to strengthen school health programs, develop strong school health teams, and effectively support a coordinated approach to school health. The institute utilizes the Coordinated School Health Model consisting of eight components including health education, health services, school environment, school nutrition, parent and community groups, mental health services, staff wellness, and physical activity.
