Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright made the following statement today following the announcement by United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan that Virginia is not among the finalists for Phase I of the Race to the Top grant competition:

Virginia submitted a solid application that carried the broad support of school divisions and other stakeholders and maintained the commonwealth’s commitment to the successful Standards of Learning program.

I look forward to receiving the reviewers’ feedback on our Phase-I application and regrouping with Governor McDonnell, the Board of Education and our stakeholders to plan for Phase II. I believe our Phase-I application will provide an excellent starting point for the next Race to the Top competition.
