The Virginia Board of Education Thursday unanimously elected Christian N. Braunlich of Fairfax County as president and Winsome E. Sears of Frederick County as vice president.
Braunlich was appointed to the board in July 2011 and has served as chairman of the K-12 policy panel’s Charter School Committee. He is vice president of the Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy and served as a member of the Fairfax County School Board from January 1996 to December 2003.
Sears, a Frederick County businesswoman, was appointed to the Board of Education in February 2011 and has served as chairman of the board’s College Partnership Laboratory Schools Committee. Sears is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in the House of Delegates in 2002 and 2003, representing portions of Hampton Roads.
Braunlich and Sears replace David M. Foster of Arlington County and Betsy D. Beamer of Henrico County, respectively, whose four-year terms on the board ended in January.
