National School Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally-assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced lunches to school-aged children. The NSLP is administered at the Federal level by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. VDOE administers the NSLP at the state level, and school divisions operate the program at the local level through agreements with VDOE. School divisions participating in the NSLP get cash subsidies and donated commodities from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for each meal served to students. The lunches must meet Federal meal pattern requirements and must be offered free or at a reduced price to eligible children. Lunch menus must provide one third of the daily recommended levels for protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and calories.
