The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) program is the Federal Government’s primary vehicle for reducing violence, alcohol and other drugs use through supporting education, prevention and intervention activities in our Nation’s schools.
What we do in the name of health, safety, and well-being is linked with teaching and learning. Teaching and learning can’t take place if students aren’t healthy, aren’t physically and mentally fit, aren’t safe” or aren’t present during school hours.

SDFSCA program resources are used to support student academic achievement through programming that:
- prevents violence, illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in and around schools
- involves parents and communities
- coordinates programming with related federal, state, school, and community efforts
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) administers SDFSCA resources, brokers information and provides technical assistance to school divisions. This Web site is intended to provide information to assist school divisions in this effort.
Virginia’s 2006-2007 SDFSCA Program Efforts
The publication, SDFSCA Program Efforts,2006-2007. As written by the individual school division coordinators, the document provides a summary of the different kinds of SDFSCA programs and activities being implemented across the Commonwealth. The intent of the document is to share program successes and to facilitate networking opportunities between coordinators.
