Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children
The Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children (Virginia Council) was formed to assist in easing the transition of the children of military families into school as a result of frequent moves and deployment of their parents. Created by the 2009 General Assembly, Virginia joins other states participating in the compact.
Virginia Council Members
According to the legislation, the Virginia Council is composed of one member of the House of Delegates; one member of the Senate; four nonlegislative citizen members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the superintendent of a school district with a high concentration of military children; and the governor or his designee. The current Virginia Council consists of the following:
- Senator John Miller of Newport News – Chairman
- Delegate M. Kirkland Cox of Colonial Heights
- Dr. Patricia I. Wright, superintendent of public instruction
- Dr. William C. Bosher Jr., distinguished professor of public policy at the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs of Virginia Commonwealth University
- Dr. James G. Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach Public Schools
- Dr. Bobby R. Browder, superintendent of Prince George County Public Schools
- Professor Marlena E. Bremseth, military spouse and mother, Purcellville
