October 19-23, 2009 – School Bus Safety Week – A “Certificate of Recognition” has been signed by Governor Kaine declaring October 19-23, 2009 as School Bus Safety Week in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Also, October 21, 2009 has been declared “School Bus Transportation Employees Appreciation Day.”
August 13, 2009 – The Board of Education is in the process of revising its Regulations Governing Pupil Transportation. A public comment period is scheduled for August 17 - October 16, 2009. Public hearings will be held September 24, 2009 at three locations. For more information, see Regulations.
VDOE has primary responsibility for the development and implementation of state laws and regulations, standards, practices and procedures to promote the safe transportation of public school pupils to and from school and school-related events. Leadership and guidance are provided to school divisions in accordance with applicable statutory requirements, Board of Education regulations, federal regulations and administrative policies. VDOE conducts on-site assessments and evaluates pupil transportation in each school division to ensure the safety pupils and compliance with all requirements.
