October 19-23, 2009 – School Bus Safety Week – A “Certificate of Recognition” has been signed by Governor Kaine declaring October 19-23, 2009 as School Bus Safety Week in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Also, October 21, 2009 has been declared “School Bus Transportation Employees Appreciation Day.”

The Board of Education is in the process of revising its Regulations Governing Pupil Transportation. A public comment period is scheduled for August 17 - October 16, 2009. Public hearings will be held September 24, 2009 at three locations. For more information, see Regulations.

Governor Kaine announces $1 million to promote walking and biking to school. The Safe Routes to School program is designed for localities, schools and not-for-profit groups seeking to improve walking and bicycling opportunities for kindergarten through eighth grade students. Local governments are also eligible to apply for funding to improve infrastructure in the vicinity of schools. See news release.

The 2008 Virginia General Assembly passed the following legislation that may affect pupil transportation. These bills have been signed by the Governor and go into effect July 1, 2008.
- Use of wireless telecommunications devices by persons driving school buses. (See Code of Virginia)
- School bus stops indicators. (See Code of Virginia)
