Teacher Licensure & Professional Development
The Virginia Department of Education licenses teachers and administrators according to regulations adopted by the Board of Education. The department also administers regulations governing teacher preparation programs to ensure that teachers enter the classroom with content knowledge and instructional skills aligned to the commonwealth's Standards of Learning and other objectives for learning and achievement. The department also administers programs to help school divisions recruit and retain highly qualified teachers and recognize instructional excellence.

Professional Development Opportunities
Teacher Retention & Support – designed to assist Virginia school divisions in supporting leadership, attracting new teachers to the commonwealth, developing and retaining high quality beginning and experienced teachers, filling teacher needs in critical shortage areas, and ensuring a supportive environment for teaching and learning to occur.
