Public Comments Sought for Fine Arts SOL Revisions

Comments concerning Fine Arts SOL proposed revisions will be accepted on May 23 immediately following the Board of Education meeting at the James Monroe Building in Richmond. Written comments will also be accepted through May 28.

Nominations Sought for VGLA Reading & Science Review Committees

June 7 is the deadline for submitting nominations for the VGLA reading and science assessments alignment review committees using the Assessment Committee Application Processing System (ACAPS). Superintendent's Memo #084-13 includes a list of the committees and other information.

JMU to host Annual Content Teaching Academies – Registration Ends June 3

The academies, held from June 24-28, offer high quality professional development that includes in-depth studies in a range of content areas. Register now!

eMediaVA Training

eMediaVA will be offering training sessions on the resources available to teachers. Sessions will be held in Norfolk on June 6 and Roanoke on June 19-20. Questions can be directed to annie.gilstrap@whro.org or 757-889-9382.

From Vision to Practice Ninth Annual Institute

This year’s Institute, Crossroads: Redefining the Educational Experience, will be held July 9-11 at the Williamsburg Hotel and Conference Center (soon to be Doubletree by Hilton Williamsburg). The deadline for registration is Friday, June 21.

Teacher Evaluation Summer Institutes

VDOE is offering two one-day institutes concerning implementation of teacher evaluation systems:

Achievement Goal Setting – Practical Guidance and Practice will be held on July 23 in Roanoke.
Assessment Literacy for Student Achievement Goal Setting will be held on July 30 in Charlottesville and again on September 24 in Richmond.

Each is designed to provide targeted technical assistance and professional development opportunities to school central office leaders, principals and teachers. For additional information and registration see Superintendent's Memo #132-13.

Economics & Personal Finance Course Option

School divisions have several course options for providing the Economics and Personal Finance course to students. One option – through Virtual Virginia – allows divisions at no cost. Training for division teachers will be provided August 5 and 6 at the Hotel Roanoke. For additional information see Superintendent's Memo #127-13.

Probationary Term of Service for Teachers

New legislation approved by the General Assembly changes what constitutes a teacher’s probationary term from “three years” to “of at least three years, and at the option of the local school board, up to five years”. For more information see Superintendent's Memo #134-13.
