VDOE & VCCS Creating Excellence Awards Recognize Exemplary CTE Programs

RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Education and Virginia’s Community Colleges honored 10 exemplary career and technical education programs and partnerships this month through the agencies’ annual Creating Excellence Awards program.

VDOE awarded Secondary CTE recognitions in three categories, as follows:

  • Advisory Committee Awards
    • State and Region 2 — Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee, Portsmouth Public Schools.
    • Region 1 — Business and Education Roundtable, Goochland County Public Schools.
  • Business and Industry Partnership Awards
    • State and Region 4 — Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cyber Division, nominated by Arlington County Public Schools.
    • Region 1 — Greenswell Growers, nominated by Goochland County Public Schools.
    • Region 2 — AMADAS Industries, nominated by Suffolk Public Schools.
  • Program Awards
    • State and Region 4 — Arlington County Public Schools’ Arlington Career Center Off-the-Pike Food Truck Culinary Arts and Sciences Program.
    • Region 1 — Richmond County Public Schools, Northern Neck Technical Center, Gaming and Simulation Design and Development.
    • Region 2 — Suffolk Public Schools, College and Career Academy at The Children’s Center at Pruden.
    • Region 5 — Nelson County Public Schools, Nelson County High School, Agricultural Education.
    • Region 6 — Pittsylvania County Public Schools, Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center, Automotive Technology.

“Our CTE programs play a vital role in meeting the workforce needs of industry, government, local communities and the commonwealth,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow said. “I congratulate the educators and business and industry partners honored with this year’s Creating Excellence Awards for their commitment to preparing young Virginians for the career opportunities of today and tomorrow.”

The Virginia Community College System presented its CTE State Awards in two categories, as follows:

  • Business and Industry Partnership Award — Micron Technology, Inc., nominated by Northern Virginia Community College
  • Program Award — Medical Administrative Support Specialization Associate of Applied Science, nominated by New River Community College

“The Creating Excellence Awards promote best practices in education and recognize exemplary contributions that improve the quality of secondary and postsecondary CTE programs statewide,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “Recognizing these outstanding CTE programs again highlights the value of CTE programs, draws attention to CTE programs at each of Virginia’s Community Colleges, and strengthens partnerships that support, promote, and enhance Virginia’s workforce and economy.”
