Richmond, Va. – The Virginia Department of Education today announced that Christina Berta will be rejoining VDOE as its Chief Operating Officer. Berta brings 22 years of public and school finance experience to the position. She most recently served as Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations for Hanover County Public Schools.

“Christina’s proven experience and leadership is a great asset to VDOE and the Commonwealth,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons. “Her first-hand experience at the state and school division level and her familiarity with the financial reporting and operations of school divisions will help us continue to assist divisions in helping our students recover from learning loss from pandemic school closures and making sure that Virginians have confidence in how their education dollars are being spent.”

Prior to her leadership with Hanover County Public Schools, Berta served as Assistant Superintendent for Budget and Finance for VDOE. She has also served as Chief Financial Officer for Chesterfield County Public Schools, Chief Financial Officer for Williamsburg-James City County Schools, and held leadership roles in financial services operations with Isle of Wight County Schools.

Berta will be filling the role left by Kent Dickey, Deputy Superintendent of Operations, who is retiring from VDOE after nearly 34 years of service to the Department.

“Almost all of my state government career has been spent at VDOE, and there couldn’t have been a better agency to do that. The impact of the work we do and the quality of the staff and leadership here is second to none. I’ve been fortunate to work here all the years I have serving school divisions and agency staff,” said Deputy Superintendent Dickey. “The school divisions will have a great partner in Christina, and I look forward to working with her to ensure a seamless transition.”

VDOE works closely with the Commonwealth’s 131 school divisions to help manage the $12.3 billion in preK-12 public education funding appropriated during the 2024/2025 Fiscal Year.
