Principals' Memo #1029-11

Department of Education

October 18, 2011

TO: Principals

FROM: Linda M. Wallinger, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

SUBJECT: Adolescent Literacy Demonstration Events

The Department of Education, through the Virginia State Personnel Development Grant, has established demonstration schools in the Content Literacy Continuum (CLC) developed by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning using the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM).  The CLC is an evidence-based adolescent literacy framework to address the literacy needs of all adolescents, aligned with Response to Intervention (RtI) and other multitiered systems of support.

Central Academy Middle School and James River High School in Botetourt County and Liberty Middle School and Patrick Henry High School in Hanover County are in the sustaining phase of the CLC framework adoption and recently received the National SIM Impact Award for 2011 from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.  Culpeper County High School and Culpeper Middle School are in the early implementing stage of the framework.  Demonstrations encompassing the middle and high schools will be held at these locations throughout the 2011-2012 school year to provide teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the CLC.  Attendees at a demonstration will have the opportunity to listen to a student panel discuss their perspectives on the framework; observe implementation of SIM in classes and other venues; converse with a cross section of stakeholders; examine data across all levels;  and experience components of SIM.

The demonstrations will occur at the following locations and dates:
Botetourt County Public Schools - November 1, 2011
Culpeper County Public Schools - November 1, 2011 and March 22, 2012
Hanover County Public Schools - November 2, 2011 and February 23, 2012

Those interested in attending a demonstration event are requested to complete the demonstration application posted at  For interactive information on the CLC in Virginia, please visit the following Web site at
