Department of Education

October 28, 2014

TO:  Principals

FROM:  John W. Haun, Chief Academic Officer/Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

SUBJECT:  Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) Workshop Training

Four regional Early Intervention Reading Initiative Workshops are planned for the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose of these regional training events is to provide professional development to K-3 classroom teachers and reading specialists.  Topics will include early reading instructional strategies and resources, using Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) for formative assessment and progress monitoring, using PALS Electronic Lesson Plans (ELPs), and making the most of PALS reports and resources.  Registration is limited to the instructional staff cited above and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Interested teachers should contact their school division PALS representative who will be responsible for registering a representative team.  A boxed lunch will be provided to all participants.  For weather related delays or cancellations, the decision of the local school division (i.e., Wise County Public Schools, Roanoke City Public Schools, Charlottesville City Public Schools, Richmond City Public Schools) will prevail.  Registered participants are encouraged to consult local information sources prior to travel if weather is a concern.
