SUBJECT:  Virginia State Bar Annual Essay Contest

The Virginia State Bar (VSB) is offering an opportunity for Virginia’s high school students to participate in an annual essay contest that has been announced on its Web site at

This is the 23rd year of the Law in Society competition.  Each year a timely hypothetical situation is written and high school students are asked to write a 1,000 word essay on the subject.  This year the subject is an essay hypothetical: “A Graduation Ruckus in Rocktown.”  Essays are judged on how well they demonstrate the student’s understanding of the role and value of the legal system in everyday life.

First place receives $2,300 cash, and the winning essay will be published on the VSB Web site.  Other awards include $1,850 cash (second place), $1,350 cash (third place), and honorable mentions of $250 cash.  More information, including contest rules and last year’s winning essay, is posted at
