SUBJECT:  School Counselor Evaluation Tool

Effective school counseling programs promote achievement, attendance and behavior, are based on school data, and address academic, career and/or social-emotional development. A comprehensive school counseling program should not only align with state and national standards, but also with your school’s mission and vision. It is important that school counselors are utilized and evaluated on standards and competencies directly related to the work for which they have been trained.

The School Counselor Summative Performance Report is intended as a tool for administrators and directors to provide school counselors with an assessment of their professional performance. This evaluation tool is designed as a sample for use by school divisions and can be modified to meet local needs.

The School Counselor Summative Performance Report tool can be accessed on the School Counseling and Advisement webpage on the Virginia Department of Education website. The webpage also contains a video that introduces the evaluation tool and discusses school counselor competencies and best practices. For questions on the evaluation tool or professional development opportunities for school counselors feel free to contact Joseph Wharff, School Counseling Specialist, via email at, or by telephone at 804-334-7917.
