SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 84
December 22, 1995 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | William C. Bosher, Jr. Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | 1994-96 School Accreditation |
Attached please find Certificates of Accreditation for schools in your division. Please note that the accrediting standards allow for biennial accreditation; therefore, the certificates are valid for school years 1994-96. Although the certificates are valid for a two-year period, you will be required to submit an interim report on your schools' continued compliance with the accrediting standards. A form for reporting the current status is also enclosed. Please make copies for each of the schools in your division. The reports must be returned no later than January 31, 1996. As you know, the status awarded schools is based on criteria which do not address student academic achievement. Both the Board and I intend to work toward developing standards that will be used to accredit schools primarily on student achievement of the Standards of Learning. We welcome your involvement when we begin the next revision of the standards. If you have schools that have been awarded the status of "Accredited with a Warning" and have a corrective action plan on file with the Department, you should provide an update on your progress toward completion of the corrective action plan when you return your interim report. Schools that are Accredited and Advised should work toward removing deficiencies prompting the awarding of that status. Questions concerning these matters should be directed to Charles W. Finley, Division of Policy and Public Affairs, at (804) 225-2747 or via VaPEN to cfinley@pen.k12.va.us.
