SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 41
February 23, 1996 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | William C. Bosher, Jr.
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Additional Information on the 1996 |
The House of Delegates yesterday adopted a floor amendment to the 1996-98 budget, offered by the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. This amendment provided for a salary increase for teachers in 1996-97 and changed the proposed salary increase in 1997-98. Specifically, the amendment provides for (1) the state share of a 1.75% salary increase effective January 1, 1997 and (2) the state share of an additional 2.0% salary increase effective January 1, 1998. This amendment required an additional $19.3 million be added to the 1996-97 proposed allocations and that $24.0 million be added to the $33.9 included in the Governor's budget for 1997-98. Attached are revised projections for the "Salary Supplement" line item relating to this change. Please remember that this change has been made only by the House of Delegates. The Senate adopted the budget amendments proposed by the Senate Finance Committee which made no change to the Governor's budget as introduced related to teacher salaries. Therefore, it will be necessary for the Conference Committee to reconcile the differences in this regard. If you have any questions or need additional information, please call Mrs. Kathryn S. Kitchen, Division Chief, Finance at (804) 225-2025, or Mrs. June F. Eanes, Director of the Budget at (804) 225-2060. WCBJr/kk Attachment: This memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
